Give Your Shoes A Check-Up

We're coming to the end of September and I thought this is a great time of the year for us to get in and to give our shoes a health check.

I know for myself I'm starting to get out and exercise a little bit more, the days are getting longer and warmer. For others you may have been exercising right through the cooler months, I know for runners that's the the peak running season.

Also it's not just for our exercise shoes, you can be doing these checks for your work and casual shoes as well.

It's really important that we make sure our shoes are giving us the support that they're supposed to. Over time they wear out, they lose their cushioning and they lose their stability.

How to "Health Check" your shoes

  1. Start by putting them on a flat surface and looking at them from behind. Are they leaning in, are they leaning out excessively. Movement in either direction is a sign that they're no longer supporting you well and need replacing.
  2. The next test is the wobble test. Again while your shoes are on a flat surface, press on the heel counter and see how the shoe moves. If they wobble excessively from side to side or backwards and forwards, the sole is showing excessive wear and you no longer have a stable surface to walk on this. This can make your feet and legs work harder when walk walking and lead to problems.
  3. Finally give your shoes a good inspection looking for any damage to the upper and outer sole. Most of the time this is obvious, you know your toe is poking through the shoe don't you, but other times it may be damaged to the internal lining of the shoe from rubbing and this could contribute to blisters or even corns and callous developing.

If you're finding any of these issues with your current shoes it's time for a new pair.

If you find that you tend to wear your shoes out quickly or you're getting any little niggles or pains, there may be some underlying cause. Make an appointment to see one of our podiatrists, they'll give your feet a thorough check-up and can help you have summer ready feet.
